Every Snug Site Hosting Service customer is now protected by a Comodo 256-bit (domain-validated) SSL Certificate. There’s nothing you need to do, this has already been activated on your domain, and all future customers will also enjoy the extra security for free. This means that you no longer have to worry about purchasing, renewing, or installing SSL certificates.
How do I make my website show up as a secure (https) site?
If your website isn’t already showing up as being at a Secure https:// address, then you will need to configure your WordPress Install to utilise the SSL Certificate.
This can be achieved by changing the “Site Address”, and “WordPress Address” within your WordPress Dashboard > Settings > General section. (ie. simply changing the http in addresses to https).
Full instructions can be found here: https://make.wordpress.org/support/user-manual/web-publishing/https-for-wordpress/
You may also want to set up a 301 redirect of your entire website from http to https, so that Google knows your preferred domain is secure.
Most of these issues can be overcome by using a WordPress HTTPS Plugin. We recommend: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-https/
If you have a Google Search Console account set up for your website, you should also add the HTTPS version of the website and set it to be your preferred domain. Upload a new sitemap with the new site during this process.
What are the benefits of SSL?
When information is transferred between a visitors Web Browser, and your Website, SSL encrypts the data before it is sent, and then decrypts it at the other end. This ensures that data remains private and prevent eavesdropping.
When someone visits your website (if you have set up your site to use https url structure) – they will see a “Secure” padlock within their browser. This looks more professional, increases visitor trust, and protects their personal information. Google search results may even gain a boost, as Google has indicated that a non-secure website may negatively impact your ranking.
Is this also available on Sub and Addon Domains?
Can I use my own Certificate?
Yes. Free SSL is only automatically applied if you do not currently have a valid certificate of your own.
How can I check to ensure that the SSL is working for my domain?
You can perform an SSL test here: https://sslanalyzer.comodoca.com
Can I use a CDN or Dynamic DNS or Proxy Service?
Free Comodo SSL can only be validated when Domains are pointing directly at the IP address of a hosting provider. If you are not sure, use the SSL Testing tool above first. Note: Most CDNs and other Proxy Services typically have their own Free SSL offerings.
What if my domain is missing the Free SSL?
It’s possible that your domain failed to verify during the SSL validation or renewal phase. Log a support Ticket by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and we will investigate.
