AI Experiments is the official, WordPress.org-maintained plugin that brings the WordPress 7.0 AI Client to life. WordPress 7.0 introduced a built-in, provider-agnostic AI layer — a PHP API that allows any plugin to send prompts to AI models through a single consistent interface, with the site owner choosing which AI provider (OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Anthropic Claude) to connect via Settings > Connectors. AI Experiments is the reference implementation that puts this infrastructure to practical use, giving content creators and site owners early access to AI features that may eventually ship in future WordPress core releases.
Current experiments include title generation (AI-suggested headlines straight from the post editor), excerpt generation, content summarisation, featured image and inline image generation, alt text generation for media library images, and Review Notes — an editorial assistant that analyses your content block by block and adds suggestions for accessibility, readability, grammar, and SEO directly into the editor as Notes. An Abilities Explorer admin screen also lets developers browse and test all registered AI abilities on their site. Because the plugin is built on WordPress’s official AI building blocks (the WP AI Client SDK, the Abilities API, and MCP Adapter), it doubles as a developer reference — a working example of how to integrate AI features into WordPress the right way.
AI Experiments is completely free to download and use. You will need an API key from at least one supported provider (OpenAI, Google AI, or Anthropic), and typical API costs for text experiments are very low. There are no subscriptions or licence fees for the plugin itself.
