Telex is an experimental AI-powered block builder created by Automattic, the team behind WordPress. You simply describe the block you want to create — a pricing calculator, an interactive FAQ accordion, a custom header feature, or any other functionality — and Telex generates the code and packages it as a downloadable plugin zip file. The whole process runs in your browser using WordPress Playground, so you can preview your block in a live WordPress environment before installing it on your actual site. Once happy with the result, you can download the plugin and install it on any WordPress site in minutes.
What sets Telex apart from generic AI coding tools is its deep WordPress-specific context. It understands Gutenberg block architecture, PHP hooks, React for the editor, and WordPress coding conventions — removing the need for you to explain how WordPress works to a general-purpose AI. You can refine your block through follow-up prompts, upload reference images or sketches to guide the design, edit the generated code directly, and even export it to a code editor like VS Code for further customisation. Telex is powered by Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini models under the hood, and every block is generated under a GPLv2 licence so you fully own what you create.
Telex is currently free to use — no WordPress.com paid plan is required, though a free WordPress.com account is needed to log in. As an experimental tool, pricing or access may evolve as it develops.
